Geography and Setting
Lake Eyasi is a seasonal, shallow endorheic salt lake situated on the floor of the Great Rift Valley in northern Tanzania. Located southwest of the Ngorongoro Crater and south of the Serengeti National Park, it lies within a bowllike depression bordered by the dramatic Eyasi escarpment on the northwest. Spanning over 1,000 square kilometers when full, the lake expands and contracts significantly depending on seasonal rainfall, shrinking to dry alkali salt flats during peak dry months.
Ecosystem and Wildlife
Unlike the lush savannahs of neighboring parks, the landscape around Lake Eyasi features arid acacia woodlands, baobab trees, and palm-lined shores. The saline water feeds a rich aquatic food chain, attracting large populations of waterbirds, including thousands of flamingos, pelicans, yellow-billed storks, and spoonbills. During wetter periods, hippos cool off in the lake's brackish waters, while the surrounding bush hosts smaller terrestrial wildlife like dik-diks, monkeys, and baboons.
Cultural Significance
The Lake Eyasi basin is renowned as a cultural haven, serving as home to some of Africa's most ancient indigenous communities. It is the primary territory of the Hadzabe people, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes on the continent, who maintain a lifestyle largely unchanged for thousands of years. The region is also inhabited by the Datoga, skilled pastoralists and blacksmiths, creating a distinct blend of human history, traditional lifeways, and rugged wilderness.
