Geography and Geology

Mount Meru is a stratovolcano located in northern Tanzania, situated roughly 70 kilometers (43 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro. Standing at an elevation of 4,562 meters (14,967 feet), it is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and the fifth-highest in Africa. Formed around 250,000 years ago, Mount Meru experienced a colossal volcanic eruption approximately 7,800 years ago that collapsed its eastern wall, leaving a dramatic horseshoe-shaped caldera with a central ash cone that remains mildly active.

Ecosystem and Wildlife

The mountain serves as the topographic heart of Arusha National Park, supporting a rich range of ecological zones along its slopes. The lower elevations feature dense montane forest that gives way to heathland and high-altitude alpine desert near the summit. Because the mountain lies within a protected park, trekking routes pass through habitats inhabited by diverse wildlife, including black-and-white colobus monkeys, giraffes, buffaloes, leopards, and over 400 bird species.

Trekking and Acclimatization

Mount Meru is a premier destination for trekkers, both as a standalone adventure and as a preparation climb for Mount Kilimanjaro. The standard ascension route follows the Momella Route over three to four days, featuring steep ridge walks with panoramic views of the surrounding plains and the neighboring peak of Kilimanjaro. Reaching the summit, known as Socialist Peak, requires navigating a narrow, rocky crater rim, offering a rewarding and challenging trek with far fewer crowds than its higher neighbor.
